PRESENTACIÓN

PROGRAMA

We are beginning to overcome the collapse that the COVID-19 pandemic caused over the past two years and, in the last few months, we have once again faced a new and complex first-order situation. The war started by the invasion of Ukraine makes us spectators to an event that is sure to turn the screw of history again. The war also makes us revisit European issues of the 21st century that we thought were already overcome. Europe as an old continent plunged into the conflict of the two great world wars was once a scene of the past, but that reality has resurfaced. Once again, the pernicious narrative of propaganda re-enters the debate; that other great war based on the struggle of narratives. The image is taken up as a demonstration, and its truth as a story overshadowed by own vested interests. Objectivity is a possibility once the different points of view show the various interpretations of the conflict. Today more than ever, it is evident that the control of images continues to be a demonstration of power. It is necessary to understand these circumstances to propose a society that knows how to read and write audiovisually, that recognizes how these narratives are created, and that can remain free from dangerous manipulations. This is, to a large extent, one of the objectives that we propose in the fields concerned with audiovisual literacy, whether they come from a communicative, educational or artistic context, or from all of them at the same time.

The International Exhibition of A/r/tographic Video Narration, as a live event, remains permeable to everything that means and resignifies the audiovisual fact; their needs and their implications in the environment of artistic and visual education. For another year, we present a program that exhibits and disseminates the results of the different investigations in the context of audiovisual a/r/tographic research. We also exhibit results that come from other environments related to creation, such as documentary cinema, audiovisual experimental, or video art.

In this convocation, we add formats experienced in previous calls for video art, and we include new proposals around a/r/tographic video narratives —a/r/tography films—, their instruments, structures, as well as their role in the field of Research based on Arts.

Our Vimeo channel is becoming a reality and the new feature of the editorial format —implementing augmented reality— has been fully formed, allowing access to works at any time and via any digital device. The repository of a/r/tographic films from the international exhibition offers new perspectives on research, creation, and pedagogy that treat the video essay as an essential form of inquiry.

The Guest Artists section is composed of proposals that deal with topics of social interest, such as the documentaries “Olvidados” by Rafael Hoces or “15 minutes from Los Asperones” by the brothers Eugenio and María Rivas Herencia. In this section, we also enjoy the video dance piece by María Ángeles Callejón Segura, “Mi migración”, and the video-performances of Liliana Alcalá Ortega and Jesica Mª Moreno García. In addition, we continue with Web.art, a program started in the last convocation. This decision is a natural extension of the different forms of interactivity around a/r/tographic video narratives, which we assume as a salient virtual expansion of the essay experiences in the future of our studies.

In this line, we continue offering a section where young filmmakers and researchers bring us their research framed in the field of audiovisual a/r/tography. Behind the denomination New a/r/tography, we’ve collected the works and texts of Iluminada Gónzalez Agudo, Ángel Barrera García and Javier Valseca Delgado, three researchers in the Doctorate program in Arts and Education at the University of Granada.

As in previous years, we preserve one of the fundamental pillars of the Exhibition: international collaboration. Thanks to this central tenet, the exhibition is a meeting place, debate, and exchange, which functions as the seed of new relationships, future tours, and upcoming needs. Again this year, we highlight the participation of Israel's Oranim College-Tivon through the specialists in audiovisual a/r/tography Yael Guilat and OdedHirsch. In addition to the usual programs linked to the Master of Visual Arts and Education of the University of Granada, this year we have a specific focus on the Documentary of experimentation with videos based in instruments such as video-evocation and video-reference.

This year incorporates a new section that expands and amplifies the contents and spaces for debate in the exhibition by premiering the series of conferences and screenings of the Seminar: A/r/tography Films: Instruments for audiovisual research and learning based on video-essay. This course is hosted by the Doctorate Program in Arts and Education of the University of Granada, organized by the professors and researchers Yael Guilat of the Oranim Academic College of Israel, José Antonio Dorado Zúñiga from the Universidad del Valle de Colombia, Juan-Ramón Barbancho, researcher and member of the Spanish Society of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts, and Rafael Marfil Carmona from the University of Granada. On this occasion, we also introduce a new feature that we hope will be consolidated in the following: the Open Convocation, an project cut short in recent years by the pandemic. This new element has allowed us to select twenty works by artists and researchers from Canada, Australia, Israel, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Colombia, Portugal and Spain, strengthening the international character of the event.

Finally, we must mention the support of the organizations and institutions that make this event possible, including the University of Granada which allows us to have spaces such as the Projection Room of the Palacio de los Condes de Gabia of the Delegation of Culture and Historical Memory of the Provincial Council of Granada, the conference and projection room of the Euro-Arab Foundation for Higher Studies, and the rooms of the University of Granada belonging to the Corrala de Santiago and the Triunfo Administrative Complex. We also highlight the support that the cultural association Vera Icono Producciones has provided the organization since the beginning of our journey, in addition to their management of the website and catalog of this exhibition.
